Earlier this week on the blog, we covered why you need mobile email management. Mobile email access is necessary for employees who need to work and send emails on the go; mobile email management is essential for securing the sensitive data contained in those emails.
AirWatch has recently widened its portfolio of mobile email management (MEM) tools for Apple and Android devices. AirWatch now offers managed access to email through either native email clients or through the AirWatch Inbox, a containerized email solution.
The native email client model offers users a familiar experience – users access corporate email through the same client that comes pre-loaded on the device, only the corporate inbox is managed and secure. AirWatch Inbox, on the other hand, puts corporate email in a separate container on the device, providing complete separation of enterprise and personal data. Both allow integration with existing backend systems such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, Office365/BPOS and Google Apps through the AirWatch Secure Email Gateway (SEG). The breakdown below will help you determine your mobile email management style.
Using the device’s native email client
Mobile Email Management (MEM) through native device clients is ideal for organizations with moderate infrastructure requirements or a corporate device deployment. Smaller businesses or companies in industries that are not highly regulated will likely choose this option for its simplified management and user experience.
The native MEM solution offers basic management controls that are sufficient for many organizations. From the console, administrators can configure email profiles, settings, certificates, SSL security and compliance policies to ensure appropriate use. Administrators can also manage access to email based on email platform, device model or operating system and block unmanaged or compromised devices from email access.
Providing email access with AirWatch Inbox
AirWatch Inbox is ideal for industries with strict regulations or companies with a BYOD program. In industries such as finance, healthcare and government, the AirWatch Email Client can help companies adhere to strict data and privacy regulations. such FIPS 140-2 and HIPAA.
Enterprises that want to enable email access on both corporate-issued and employee-owned devices can deploy the AirWatch Email Client either as a managed application or as an application within the AirWatch Workspace, the separate, managed space on an employee-owned device that houses all corporate apps. Administrators can manage both ownership types, regardless of email platform or device type, from a single web-based console.
