I recently returned from Gartner Portals, Content and Collaboration Summit last week, where I gained some great insights from customers and analysts. The enterprise file sync and share market is gaining momentum, and it was exciting to hear from some of the most innovative companies that are using and creating the technology. The conference highlight for me was a panel session where AirWatch, Adventist Health and Southwestern Energy discussed their success with AirWatch’s mobile content management (MCM) solution, Secure Content Locker.
Southwestern Energy spoke about the importance of providing remote employees with digital safety manuals in the field. Secure Content Locker also gave executives the ability to securely access and share corporate files on the road from their iPads.
Adventist Health discussed stripping email attachments into Secure Content Locker’s encrypted container. Using Secure Content Locker the company is able to edit those files, as well as share links, files and folders if necessary.
Each company expressed the importance of having a unified experience where communication and collaboration can take place.
Below are some key themes I noted at the conference.
Proactive vs. Reactive
Today, it’s easier than ever for sensitive content to slip through the cracks. Trusted employees with no malicious intent can accidentally put themselves and their organizations at risk. At the conference, it was clear that IT is looking for a solution that provides them with the opportunity to not only secure their organization’s proprietary information, but also drive revenue through collaboration. The difficulty in this is finding the right solution your organization can grow with and that your employees will adopt.
Organizations are finally turning the corner and now understand the importance of content management. The enterprise file sync and share market is still several years from reaching full maturity – because of this many organizations have turned to point solutions. However, at the conference I saw many organizations that are beginning to take a more strategic approach. They are actively taking action against solutions used without consent from IT, otherwise known as shadow IT.
Many decision-makers I spoke with at the conference are placing added emphasis on security in 2014. Data breaches are a legitimate threat, and enterprises are beginning to understand that. It’s the enterprises that are proactive, rather than reactive, that will be better prepared as new devices and technologies enter their organizations.
Cloud vs. On-premise
The cloud has emerged as a viable and agile option for IT. Many organizations are choosing to move in that direction because of the flexibility and reduced capital expense the cloud provides. However, large organizations have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars – in some cases millions – on building a secure on-premise infrastructure. Moving away from that investment is going to negatively affect the bottom line. Many organizations simply cannot afford to ditch their existing infrastructure.
Enterprises are looking for a bridge. They need a solution that can integrate with their existing content repositories and help them migrate to the cloud.
