Here we are on Day 2 of VMworld U.S. 2014 and I could not be more excited about sharing with everyone all the great things the team has been working on, later this morning on stage during the keynote. We have so much to share with you and there are too many for me to cover here in my blog so I am going to focus on the exciting announcements made this morning.
The VMware End-User Computing Group made several product announcements that advance end-user computing that will set the agenda for the rest of the industry to follow. In addition, we will showcase innovative use cases for our products on stage at the general session later this morning to spotlight how they work in the real world. You will also see the amazing collaborative work we have done with some of our top tier technology partners.
Setting The Innovation Agenda for End-User Computing
Let me kick things off by introducing the brand new VMware Workspace Suite, a new integrated platform for managing applications, data and devices. The solution is comprised of AirWatch mobile management, AirWatch Secure Content Locker, VMware Horizon 6 and VMware Workspace Portal. It delivers a unified end-user experience across mobile and desktop devices while providing IT with comprehensive management through an integrated platform.
This is a major product milestone for VMware and a great solution for customers because it brings together the leading enterprise mobile management solution with the leading desktop virtualization solution. VMware Workspace Suite brings together best of breed solutions that other vendors cannot match.
We’re also pushing the envelope on other fronts – propelling desktop virtualization into the next phase of innovation.
We acquired a company called CloudVolumes, a leading provider of real-time application delivery technology that enables enterprises to easily deliver native applications to virtualized environments on-demand. This will dramatically change the virtual desktop game by addressing the application and performance challenge so customers no longer have to choose between cost and a fast, personalized desktop experience.
We also introduced Project Meteor, technology preview showcasing next generation desktops and applications as a service. This technology is truly amazing and can dynamically create personalized desktops using any available generic virtual machine. Project Meteor will then deliver the applications in seconds to any device with an HTML 5 based browser. This will offer a mobile-like experience in its speed and personalization, while offering the agility and anywhere access of the cloud. It is truly amazing technology that our talented engineers have been dreaming up.
Hold on, there’s still more….
We are also introducing applications as a service in VMware Horizon DaaS, making it THE ONLY solution in the industry to offer comprehensive management of published applications, shared desktops, and full virtual desktops and applications using DaaS. This provides added choice to customers considering a move to DaaS and provides one solution that can support multiple types of desktops and applications to cater to their preference.
Lastly, global customers in Europe can now also take advantage of VMware Horizon DaaS along with a third desktop service option, VMware Horizon DaaS Enterprise to realize cloud scale and cloud economics.
What does this all mean to customers?
It means VMware is breaking down the traditional barriers of cost, complexity and performance that have been head winds against the adoption of virtual desktops. VMware introduced VMware Virtual SAN last year and now we are introducing new real-time application delivery and capabilities for desktops that make modernizing enterprise desktops with VMware Horizon more attractive than ever before!
Partnering with Industry Leaders
In addition to organic growth and innovation, VMware delivers value to customers by partnering with top tier technology companies who are leaders in their respective categories. With 75,000 VMware partners, it’s impossible for me to talk about them all so I’ll just highlight two in particular.
We have partnered with Google and NVIDIA to offer a technology preview of a collaborative effort that leverages the next generation of VMware Blast and NVIDIA GRID™ vGPU™ to deliver high-performance virtual desktops and workstation-class graphics applications on Chromebooks to satisfy the most demanding users. This effort expands the hardware options for customers who want to move to a virtual desktop model for greater mobility and access to applications and data, so they can select the system of their choice.
We are also announcing an expanded partnership later today with SAP to deliver a seamless mobile application experience for end-users through the integration of SAP Mobile Place and AirWatch solutions. As the first SAP partner to integrate with Mobile Place, VMware will enable joint customers an easier way to leverage the AirWatch platform with SAP applications and applications built using SAP mobile technology.
We will also be showcasing some of the amazing things we’re doing with our partners during the keynote I’m in later this morning so make sure you attend. If you weren’t able to travel to San Francisco to attend in-person, you can watch it live by going to VMware NOW.
Making Our Vision Real
As some of you have heard me say before, our product strategy and vision for EUC is to help companies realize the workplace of the future where we allow workers to work at the speed of life. Whether they are using their laptop, smartphone, tablet or Tesla, their applications and data should follow them wherever they go. VMware Workspace Suite along with the application and desktop innovations introduced today, are steps in making this vision a reality.
To top it all off, VMware was recently ranked the top vendor in enterprise mobile management (EMM) by the Radicati Group and in desktop virtualization by Gigaom Research so we are being recognized by the industry for pushing the technology envelope.
There will be product demos throughout the VMworld show floor where you can see first hand how all of our VMware products work, including the new Workspace Suite. So swing by the VMware booth, attend breakout sessions, chat with our experts and ask them questions. I have a feeling you will be as excited as I am about the possibilities and real, measurable benefits VMware can deliver to organizations in all industries as they look to embrace the mobile-cloud.
