Recently, Gartner released its 2016 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Enterprise Mobility Management Suites report. This report evaluates critical capabilities of enterprise mobility management vendors based on how well each vendor delivers each capability. VMware AirWatch received the highest scores in three use cases, including:

  • General-purpose
  • Unified endpoint management (UEM)
  • Special-purpose device support

General-Purpose Use Case Defined

Gartner defines the general-purpose use case as enterprise mobility becoming a more established IT technology as organizations manage their environments centrally. Global organizations support a broad range of devices, applications and requirements. This requires scalability and a complete set of capabilities.

AirWatch has proven large-scale deployments around the world and supports a flexible approach to managing diverse use cases and customer requirements. Our highly scalable and multitenant architecture provide seamless support as organizations grow their mobile deployments from 1,000 to over 100,000 devices.

Unified Endpoint Management Use Case Defined

The unified endpoint management use case is defined by Gartner as organizations needing enterprise mobility management (EMM) tools to manage all devices under a single unified console, including support for Windows 8 and 10, Mac OS X and mobile devices in one interface. This use case looks at vendor support for mobile device management (MDM) functions, as well as traditional client management functionality, to do security configuration assessment, patching, software distribution and remote control. This use case weighs client management most heavily. It also examines the need for native operating system (OS) MDM and mobile application management (MAM) support, and how such vendors will move in this direction, as more of their unique functions are subsumed by the OS. A unified management console is also required.

AirWatch is the most comprehensive enterprise mobility platform built to manage any endpoint, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, ruggedized devices, printers, wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) devices across all major operating systems in a single management console. Committed to driving innovation in unified endpoint management, AirWatch provided same-day support for Windows 10 management, including crucial enterprise features like Azure Active Directory integration, Windows Update management, health attestation and more. At last fall’s AirWatch Connect, we also showcased one of the industry’s first IoT stories with Coca-Cola Freestyle.

Special-Purpose Use Case Defined

click to share twitter cta buttonGartner defines this use case as organizations having specific use cases for mobile devices and choosing devices that are best-suited to those purposes. The device is often a dedicated, ruggedized, single-purpose product running a customized Android or Windows OS or a unique thing that’s running.

The AirWatch platform is built to support various use cases spread across the business—whether the device is used by a knowledge worker in a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) scenario, a device kiosk in a retail store front or the ruggedized device used in the warehouse for inventory management. Since our early success managing ruggedized devices, as well as our acquisition of Motorola Solutions’ Mobility Services Platform (MSP) solution and best-in-class rugged-dedicated R&D team, AirWatch has continuously demonstrated dedication to and innovation in managing ruggedized endpoints.
