Are you one of the 99.6%?
The Verge reported this week that Apple and Google claimed a “duopoly” on the Q4 smartphone market. According to a new Gartner report, 99.6% of all new smartphones sales ran either Android or iOS operating systems (OS). Here’s the breakdown:
- Android: 81.7%
- iOS: 17.9%
- Windows Phone: 0.3%
- BlackBerry: 0.2%
- Other: 0.2%
“… with Google and Apple’s supremely dominant market share, no one is predicting the rise of a new mobile OS for the foreseeable future.” —James Vincent, The Verge
Two groovy new Android features.
Computerworld’s J.R. Raphael wrote this week that a new Google Play Services app update offers new two cool new features for Android-ers:
- Instant Tethering: Pixel and Nexus devices will automatically “sense” an unconnected device nearby and automatically pair it (with permission, of course).
- Instant Apps: Google announced this capability nearly a year ago, but looks like this feature is finally coming. In a nutshell, you can now launch Android apps without ever installing the app. Just open it, use it, close it and—poof!—it’s gone.
Here’s the thing…

“The true value of wearables lies in the line-of-business and workflow applications that enable operational employees real-time, hands-free access to business-critical information. … It’s imperative that wearable deployments easily integrate with existing enterprise systems.” —Jessie Stoks, VMware
