At a press event in New York today, Microsoft introduced Surface Pro 3, which runs Windows 8.1 Pro and includes features users need “for work and play,” according to the press release. It’s “the tablet that can replace your laptop,” according to Panos Panay, corporate vice president for Microsoft Surface. “You’ll love being able to carry a single device for your next class, workday or weekend getaway knowing you have all the power you need.”
“With the introduction of Surface Pro 3, our commitment to business has never been stronger,” the press release boldly states.
The tablet-laptop hybrid includes a snap-on keyboard and has multiple RAM, storage and Intel® Core™ processor options and is just 9.1 mm thick. Hardware upgrades include a multi-position kickstand and a stylus, both designed to aid in note-taking on the larger 12-inch display. A click of the Surface Pen launches a new page in the note-taking app OneNote. The tablet offers up to nine hours of battery life – perfect for a day at the office.
The device also includes a full-size USB 3.0 port, microSD card reader and Mini DisplayPort, as well as several optional accessories, such as an ethernet adapter, which could help users and businesses see the device as a laptop replacement. According to Microsoft, BMW Group, The Coca-Cola Company and Louis Vuitton have already committed to purchasing and deploying the device.
Starting at an estimated retail price of just $799, Surface Pro 3 will be offered in multiple configurations featuring 4th-generation Intel® Core™ i3, i5 and i7 processors. Specs are available here.
