AirPatrol brings context awareness to AirWatch EMM

  • Lanier Norville By

For AirPatrol, the maker of the context-aware security technology ZoneDefense, location is everything. Through a technical integration with AirWatch, ZoneDefense makes it possible for mobility administrators to use location to their advantage, automatically adjusting security settings based on where a device is being used.

ZoneDefense for AirWatch creates “hot zones” that can change the features, apps and content available on an AirWatch-managed device when it enters the area. The capability is called context awareness, and context can refer to an area as large as an entire building or campus, or a space as small as a cubicle. In the following video, AirPatrol Systems Engineer David Morse describes how organizations are using the technology to enforce stringent security in sensitive environments. (Read more below the video.)

Using ZoneDefense, an administrator can configure device policies so that they automatically change based on a user’s location. As mobile devices enter a specific zone, a new security policy can be triggered preventing unauthorized activities such as file transfers, use of the device camera or recording or accessing certain apps. Once the device exits the zone, the more stringent security policy is replaced with the standard policy and the mobile device activities return to normal.

For example, schools may choose to disable social and gaming apps during class but enable them during free periods and lunch. Or a hospital may choose to disable cameras on devices when they enter patient areas to help protect privacy and comply with organizational policies. ZoneDefense is accurate to within two meters of a device’s actual location, and both known and rogue devices can be detected.

“As smart devices incorporate more advanced technology, we believe the concept of context-aware devices is becoming more prominent for individuals and businesses,” said AirPatrol CEO Cleve Adams in a press release. “With ZoneDefense for AirWatch, organizations can shift from the ‘one device, one policy’ model inherited from the PC and laptop era in favor of ‘the right policy at the right place’ paradigm, which is much more suited to the mobile world.”
