VMware and AirWatch, one year later

  • Maddie Cook By

Today marks the one year anniversary of VMware’s acquisition of AirWatch. Over the past year, AirWatch and VMware have integrated across mobile and desktop to deliver a unified end-user computing solution – one of many industry trends VMware is helping shape.

In the Q4 meeting last month, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said, “As we approach the one year anniversary of AirWatch joining the VMware family, it’s great to see our growth and momentum go from strength to strength.”

Last year, both AirWatch and VMware  increased each other’s customer and partner count by the thousands. The AirWatch customer base grew from 10,000 to 15,000. As part of VMware, AirWatch has also added multiple VMware partners including SAP, HP, Capgemini, Verizon, Jasper and others.

AirWatch’s partner ecosystem has grown to include household names like Xamarin and Box, as well as the best emerging solutions on the market. In September, AirWatch introduced AppShield, a program that gives app development and delivery platforms access to AirWatch security and management APIs, so that apps built with those platforms automatically include AirWatch security and management features.

AirWatch also introduced new productivity tools of its own, AirWatch Chat and AirWatch Video. Both will be available in AirWatch 8, announced today.

Analysts have recognized AirWatch as a leader in several facets of the EMM industry in the past year. Most recently, Nemertes ranked AirWatch MDM and MAM as top midmarket solutions and Compass Intelligence awarded four Mobility awards for Mobile Device Management, Mobile App Management, Integrated Mobile Management and Mobile Services. Also last year, Gartner placed AirWatch as a leader in the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobility Management and Aragon recognized AirWatch as a leader in content solutions.

AirWatch has also grown in its international presence, opening new offices in Tokyo and Beijing, and appointing John Loparco to lead new business development in Latin America.

AirWatch Connect Barcelona will highlight the details of AirWatch’s post-acquisition roadmap, with keynotes from VMware and the EMC federation.
