New Telecom Management Capabilities in AirWatch 8 Help IT Save Money

  • Gabrielle Ferree By

Continuing the AirWatch Blog series on new features in AirWatch 8, today we’re going to take a deeper look at AirWatch telecom management features introduced with the recent AirWatch 8 release.

Telecom management is a key feature in an enterprise mobility program. It involves collecting mobile device usage such as voice, SMS, and data along with roaming information to display and address the data directly from an EMM console. This can be used to identify outliers for notification and take action to reduce costs before “bill shock” occurs. These capabilities allow IT to monitor device owners’ voice and data usage and ensure that the company is not exceeding or underutilizing data plans. With the AirWatch EMM suite, IT can manage telecom from the same dashboard and console as all other aspects of the mobility rollout, including devices, applications, content and laptops.

With AirWatch telecom management, customers can create and assign plans to segment devices and have a granular look at usage by organization groups, user groups, specific users or carriers. IT can disable AirWatch Content Locker or AirWatch Browser sync over roaming or cellular to reduce major data usage. Additionally, IT can set up automatic compliance actions against data, voice, SMS, roaming or SIM card changes.

New telecom management features for AirWatch 8 include:

  • Shared plans: IT can create plans for devices to consume a common pool of usage. Plans can also be created for the heaviest set of data users.
  • Whitelist roaming partners: In the case IT wants roaming to be ignored for certain carriers, “roaming partners” can be set up to whitelist roaming status on iOS and Android. This informs AirWatch that those devices should not be treated as roaming through AirWatch functionality.
  • Roaming data usage compliance: IT can set up compliance policies to be triggered when a user reaches set thresholds of roaming data usage. The AirWatch compliance engine can automatically take pre-determined action on users reaching these data limits.

AirWatch is also expanding its split billing capabilities through the AirWatch SDK and partnership with AT&T Work, which is especially useful in BYOD scenarios.
