VMware claimed this week’s top headlines in business mobility with a flurry of announcements and product updates. Got five minutes? Here’s your cheat sheet to this week’s top mobile news.
Watch Sanjay Poonen, our executive vice president and general manager, recap the week in this video:
VMware Workspace ONE & VMware AirWatch 8.4
What’s New: Powered by AirWatch 8.4 and VMware Identity Manager, Workspace ONE now provides built-in two-factor authentication (VMware Verify), supports the Microsoft Windows Store for Business, supports Apple education technologies in iOS 9.3 and advances BYOD support with adaptive management technology.
— VMware AirWatch (@AirWatch) June 15, 2016
Why It Matters: “The biggest addition [VMware Verify]…allows employees to use their personal smartphone or tablets as an authentication token,” said TechRepublic. To access apps that typically require IT to manage the device, users can instead enroll personal devices in Workspace Services. These new standalone mobile application management (MAM) capabilities protect user privacy and choice by giving IT control over just corporate data, not users’ devices, summarized TechTarget.
What Experts Said: “Up until now, very few MDM servers had actually taken advantage of these nuances. Instead, most products take all the rights by default and then implemented any restrictions on management controls in the admin UI. However, now VMware will offer MDM connections with these more limited capabilities. I’ve always been a proponent of offering as much mobile app management flexibility as possible, so I love this announcement.” —Jack Madden, analyst and blogger

VMware TrustPoint, Powered by Tanium
What We Did: VMware and security leader Tanium combined technologies to create a next-generation threat detection and remediation solution for enterprise endpoints called VMware TrustPoint.
Why It Matters: With traditional endpoint security and management, IT focused on preventing threats and configuring device security. With VMware TrustPoint, IT can continuously detect and control advanced threats and unmanaged endpoints, and automate endpoint management. The solution can also help IT quickly upgrade to the most secure version of Windows by automating the migration of hundreds of machines to Windows 10.
What Experts Think: “Powering their TrustPoint solution with Tanium is huge. It will help VMware further differentiate and be the architecture of choice for end-user virtualization. Security seems to be the biggest driver behind end-user virtualization these days.” —Scott Miller, director of data center at World Wide Technology

New Allies for Mobile & Cloud Security
What’s New: Since the VMware AirWatch Mobile Security Alliance (MSA) launched in 2015, top security providers have joined and integrated their solutions into the AirWatch EMM platform. This week, VMware welcomed five cloud access security broker (CASB) leaders to MSA: Blue Coat Systems, CloudLock, Netskope, Palo Alto Networks and Skyhigh Networks.
Why It Matters: The integration of cloud security products into AirWatch and Workspace ONE simplifies security management across mobile devices and cloud apps.
What CASBs Said: “Cloud applications built for mobile devices have become indispensable productivity tools for many organizations. With this growing trend, many IT teams are struggling to extend policy enforcement across devices, users and cloud applications. The extension of our partnership with VMware to include Aperture will provide a unique approach to securing SaaS applications accessed through mobile devices to prevent data risk, malware insertion and compliance violations.” –Chad Kinzelberg, senior vice president of corporate and business development, Palo Alto Networks

VMware Horizon Air on the IBM Cloud
What’s New: Earlier this year, IBM and VMware partnered to enable customers to run a VMware Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) environment—VMware vSphere, NSX and Virtual SAN—on the IBM Cloud. This week, both companies expanded that partnership with the introduction of VMware Horizon Air on the IBM Cloud.
Why It Matters: Horizon Air lets your company deliver virtual desktops and applications from the cloud. This Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution helps employees work anywhere and anytime, and saves you the time and money of managing a legacy, on-premises infrastructure. You will soon be able to easily deliver and scale Horizon Air globally on the growing, lightning-fast IBM Cloud with the same low costs from VMware.
What IBM Said: “Every company will need to transition to the cloud to remain competitive. The strategic partnership to support VMware Horizon Air on IBM Cloud, provides a fantastic example of how IBM and VMware are helping customers dramatically simplify this move.” —Robert LeBlanc, senior vice president of IBM Cloud

EMM Software Leader & Largest Market Share
What We’re Celebrating: AirWatch has been named a Leader for six consecutive years on the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM), but this year, for the first time a single vendor, AirWatch, was positioned highest and furthest on both axes. In another analyst report, IDC called AirWatch one of the major EMM stories of 2015 and revealed that AirWatch accounts for the largest EMM software market share of any vendor today.
