Surgicorps’ Incredible Social Good & Mobility Story

  • Andrew Berenato By

VMware’s Andrew Berenato shares his powerful story of how mobile technology helps Surgicorps further its philanthropic mission of “changing lives, one surgery at a time.”

For the last 22 years, Surgicorps International has been changing lives by providing free surgical and medical care to patients around the globe who can’t afford or don’t have access to medical care. Surgicorps just completed their tenth trip to Bhutan, where they provided life-changing surgeries to 70 patients—from infants born with cleft lips and palates to burn victims that needed reconstructive surgeries.

I first had the opportunity to work with Surgicorps back in November, when I accompanied the group on a trip to Vietnam as a non-medical volunteer. Leading up to the trip, I worked with the Surgicorps team to figure out how I might be able to leverage VMware AirWatch and iPad Pro devices to improve operational processes, deliver digital patient records and enhance the patient experience that Surgicorps delivers.

In Bhutan earlier this year, two Surgicorps nurses review this patient's records using the VMware mobility solution of an AirWatch managed iPad with ProntoForms.

Prior to arriving in Vietnam, I got my hands on a couple iPads and started a free trial with the ProntoForms solution. I created a digital patient form that the Surgicorps team might be able to use to replace their paper forms and screening processes used at the time—and there began our proof of concept.

After my trip to Vietnam last fall, I was determined to get more involved and help deliver a fully mobile patient form and patient engagement experience for Surgicorps. I immediately met with the VMware Foundation team, and they were intrigued and interested to help. They urged me to apply for a grant that could help deliver an integrated mobile experience to the Surgicorps team for 2016 and beyond.

With the help of the VMware Foundation and in conjunction with our partners at ProntoForms, we created a mobile solution that allowed Surgicorps to manage iPad Pro devices with AirWatch. The solution also delivered the ProntoForms app to all devices prior to their April trip to Bhutan.

“Our missions pose a number of challenges in-country, from language and communication to keeping track of patient forms, photos and surgical notes. The mobile solutions from AirWatch and ProntoForms streamlined our patient screening process and added a layer of security to the patient information we collect,” said Linda Esposto, director of operations and programs at Surgicorps. “The iPads and apps delivered by AirWatch were so user friendly that all our volunteers were up and running in no time and were able provide a more engaging experience to their patients.”

“We serve areas of the world where there is no patient chart retention, and now we are able to share copies of all patient records with the local hospitals, so they can better treat their patients in the future.” —Linda Esposto, Surgicorps

I’m happy to report that we completed our first mobility-enabled trip a few months ago. Along the way, we saw success and identified areas of improvement. But overall, we helped eliminate a cumbersome patient workflow to allow the Surgicorps team to focus on the main aspect of their mission: the patient. The positive effects of the Surgicorps team are felt far beyond the operating room and impact not only the individual patient, but also their families and their entire community.

We are very proud to be partnering with Surgicorps and partnering to better lives all around the world. I look forward to sharing more of this story with you in the future.
